How to Fill Out a Wine Tasting Rating Sheet
|
Are you planning a wine tasting party? If so, you will need to create a wine tasting rating sheet for your guests to fill out. Even if you are going to attend a wine tasting it helps to know about this helpful form. These forms allow you to rate the wines you've tasted so that you'll remember which ones were your favorites and why. At the top of the page there should be a space where you fill in the varietal, vintage and winery. Below this, there should be a score sheet with six entries.
The first entry is titled Visual and the point value is 0 to 4. To score wine for visual appeal, hold a half filled glass up against a white surface in good light. Note whether or not the wine is cloudy or clear. Note the color and its intensity. The wine should be clear and of appropriate color. The next category to rate is Aroma. The aroma refers to the scent of the wine. To gauge the aroma, swirl the wine gently in the glass and inhale the scent. The point range for this category is 0 to 6. You may also want to make notes in the margins if you find it helpful.
Then there's texture. Many wine newbies don't realize there is actually a texture to wine and that different wines have different textures. This point range is 0 to 4 and determining the value is easy. Hold the wine in your mouth and feel it on your tongue. The wine should feel smooth in your mouth. After texture comes taste. Taste is perhaps the most important category when it comes to wine. The point value for this entry is 0 to 10. Swirl the wine around your mouth and make sure it gets on all your tastebuds before spitting out or swallowing to get the flavor of the wine. This is another category where taking notes can be helpful.
The final category of a wine tasting sheet is appropriately named Finish and has a point value of 0 to 6. After you swallow the wine or spit it out, take note of what flavors remain. Determine the aftertaste and whether it is pleasant or unpleasant. After you've filled out all the fields add up your points to get your total. During a wine tasting, you will of course taste many wines and will need a form for each of them. You can download evaluation sheets online or create your own with a word processing program.
